We Filipinos, after all, were “made in the image of the United States” shortly after the U.S. Years prior to the ‘Martial Law,’ there were ‘anti-government’ student riots, and heavy ‘marijuana’ use – we were a ‘mirror image’ of what was happening in America at the same time. As schoolchildren, we were bombarded by ‘pro-government’ propaganda though songs and classroom topics. President Ferdinand Marcos instituted ‘Martial Law’ in the Philippines in 1972, I was eight years old. So, Filipinos read, write and spoke English well enough to be understandable.Įven at a young age, I was keenly aware of my surroundings, way beyond my age. Before the late 80’s in the Philippines, English was the medium of instruction from kindergarten on. I would admit a lot of the ‘phrases’ were unknown to me at the time I was born in the Philippines after all and English was a second language to me. The imagery was just beautifully sad, and the music was hauntingly beautiful. ‘American Pie’ – loved that song from the first time I heard it on the radio in my early teens ( the music was first sung when I was seven years old).
